Mom's Chocolate Chip Cookies

4 1/2 t vanilla
2 1/2 c shortening
5 eggs
1 1/4 c brown sugar
2 1/4 t salt
2 1/4 t soda
5 1/2 c flour
12 oz chocolate chips
